Mwamba RFC posted wins over Strathmore Leos in Kenya Cup and Eric Shirley Shield matches played on Saturday at Jamhuri Park.
In Kenya Cup, Mwamba were first off the block with a George Mutuku penalty that was cancelled out by Elkeans Musonye try. The score remained 5-3 for most of the first half as both teams tried to get a break.
Alex Aturo would break break the caginess when Mwamba played a quick ball off a line out. Quick hands created an overlap at the wing and Aturo strolled home for the opening try. Mutuku missed the conversion for a 8-5 halftime lead.
After the resumption, Mwamba were the hungrier of the two sides and Mutuku again was on the mark with another penalty. Kulabu attacked relentlessly and their efforts were rewarded when Marvin “Matelong” Odembo received a well weighted pass from Mutuku and dashed over 50m leaving several defenders for the dead to score under the posts. Mutuku converted for a 18-5 final score.
In the ESS, Mwamba II overcame a shaky start to hit Strath II 22-13 in a match played at 10.00am on Saturday. Strath II raced to a 10-3 halftime lead but the Black Shirts fought back through a Brian Kivasia drop goal and tries from Ken Okwado, John Oliale and Daniel Taabu to overturn the deficit.
The ESS side has qualified for the play off as they 49 points, 11 ahead of sixth placed Kabras Sugar II.
Both teams have now shifted their focus on the final match of the regular season against KCB RFC at KCB Sports Club on Saturday.
