Mwamba Ladies rose to fourth position with 31 points after they finished second in the second leg of Kenya Rugby Union Women’s Festival held at KCB Sports Club.
The Black Shirts started their campaign with 31-0 blanking of Kisumu before going down 17-5 to Impala in the last game of Pool C. They then qualified to Cup Semis as best loser and booked a semi against Nakuru RFC.
In the semi, Esther “Chiwawa” Chamchui belied her inexperience by completely shutting out experienced Nakuru wingers who wouldn’t find a way around her on the wings. In the forwards, skipper Evelyn Kalemera led her charges as they repulsed any attack from Wanoyre. It eventually ended 0-0 and it had to be decided via drop kicks.
Janet Okello got Kulabu under way with a superb kick down the middle before Sharon Kerubo and Kalemera kicked theirs from difficult angles. Nakuru had two successful kicks. The girls were delighted to be in the finals for the first time this season.
In the final, Okello’s lone try was not enough to silence a clinical Impala side that punished Mwamba for the defensive mistakes they committed. Mwamba eventually lost 5-15, but came out with their pride restored and confident of better outing in the third leg.
“As I told you, most of our players are beginners and they are growing into the game every tournament. They are now able to tackle confidently and now just to work on the tactics and we will be unstoppable,” Kalemera told MwambaRugby.com on Sunday.
The next leg will take place on March 3 at RFUEA Grounds and will be hosted by Stanbic Mwamba.
