Felix “Top Dog” Otieno and Alfred Mutahi are the new faces that have been drafted in Mwamba RFC’s squad going to Prinsloo 7s tournament in Nakuru on August 29-30th.
Otieno and Mutahi take over from workhorse Joseph Oriwo and impressive Mike Okima. Oriwo has been in the team for the last three legs while Okima made his début in Kisumu and was part of the victorious Driftwood team in Mombasa.
Speaking to MwambaRugby.Com, the club captain Dan Sikuta noted the intense competition at the club and lauded the two players for making the cut. “Those two boys have worked in training and have had an excellent attitude. It’s no surprise that Johnny (head coach Johnny Mbai) selected them,” he said.
He called upon them to keep up high performance set by the club in the previous leg. “We go to Nakuru as favourties, but every other team will be looking to beat us. To Felix and Alf, time to step up and fight for the badge and your team mates,” he added.
On his part, Otieno was delighted with the call up and vowed to not disappoint the coach and the fans. “It’s an opportunity I have waited for the last 18 months since I broke my leg in Nakuru. I will grab this chance and make sure that I make my coach and the fans proud,” he spoke to MwambaRugby.com at the club’s training grounds at Railways Club.
Mwamba are seeded first in Prinsloo 7s together with tricky Kabras RFC, a hard fighting Western Bulls and MKU Thika. They are placed third on the National Sevens Series log.
