Head Coach Benjamin Ayimba has included the experienced Humphrey Kayange who makes his first appearance since the 2015 London Sevens and debutant Donald Aluoch in the Kenya Sevens squad that will do duty at the third and fourth rounds of the 2015/16 HSBC Sevens World Series in Wellington and Sydney . Andrew Amonde returns to skipper the side after missing the opening two rounds in Dubai and Cape Town for personal reasons.
Speaking about Aluoch’s inclusion, Ayimba said, “ We have that chance to expose one young player, it is Don’s chance now, he has shown a lot of potential.”
“Of course maturity is very good for us. Andrew and Humphrey Kayange are the sort of people who lead from the front. They understand the game very well and we are looking to boost a lot of what we did in the past two tournaments (Dubai & Cape Town,” said Ayimba on the return of stalwarts Amonde and Humphrey Kayange.
Commenting on the overall squad selection, Ayimba said, ” The squad was selected based on attendance at training and the form of the players. Players like Dennis Ombachi and Leonard Mugaisi are fit but there was intense competition to select the final twelve man squad and they simply missed out.”
Kenya are in Pool D for the Wellington Sevens in New Zealand on 30/31 January with Australia, Canada and Portugal. Ayimba said, “It is a very tricky group. If you look at how the Australians and Canadian play, they bring everything to the field and that is going to be a huge challenge. We also don’t take Portugal very lightly because they’ve not being playing well and this could just be the tournament where they raise their game. It will be very important for us to be focused on the park.”
The team departs for New Zealand on Sunday 24 January 2015.
