Mwamba RFC had a good weekend as the senior men’s team broke the Kakamega jinx by thrashing Western Bulls 36-10 in a Kenya Cup tie played at Kakamega School on Saturday afternoon.
Mwamba RFC had never won against Western Bulls in Kakamega for four straight seasons.
In Kakamega Dan Sikuta and Dennis Ombachi scored a brace each as Joe Otieno and Shaban Ahmed added a try a piece. Shaban kicked three conversions.
Ombachi opened the scoring early in the game with a try but Shaban missed the conversion. Sikuta was next in the try box and this time round Shaban was accurate with the kick for a 12-0 lead.
Western Bulls hit back immediately with a try of their own but missed the kick for a 12-5 halftime lead.
After the break, Kulabu started off where they left when Ken Handas was at the back of the rolling maul to score the third try. Conversion was wide. Bulls again hit back almost immediately scoring their last try of the match.
Ombachi was next on the score sheet timing his run to break through the Western Bulls defence for the bonus try. Shaban missed the kick. Sikuta was not yet done as another massive run resulted in another tyy that was converted by Shaban.
Joe Otieno rounded off the scoring with the last play scoring off a loose pass from Bulls. Shaban was sure with the boot for a 36-10 final score.
Mwamba’s development side Mwamba III however lost to Masaku 3-17 in an entertaining match played at Machakos Stadium.
