Braces from Michael Owiti and Humphrey Kayange ensured that Mwamba RFC snatched a nervy 22-16 bonus point win over a gutsy Blak Blad in a Kenya Cup match played at Impala Club on Saturday 4th March 2016.
The students were first on the board with a Levy Amunga penalty before landed his first for the afternoon. Amunga would again slot over another penalty and once again Kayange canceled out their lead with Lavin Asego converting for a 12-6 half time lead.
In the second half, Blad scored a try and Amunga kicked over the conversion to retake the lead. Asego would miss a penalty with eight minutes remaining after which Amunga scored another penalty for a 16-12 lead.
With two minutes on remaining on the board, Alex Aturo chipped over and gathered his deft kick but was caught short of the try line. Ronnie Omondi swung the ball to Asego who floated a long pass to Greg Odhiambo. Greg set up Mike Owiti for a try at the opposite corner. Momentum had shifted to the Black Shirts now.
With virtually seconds on the clock remaining, Owiti kicked a grubber gathered it and stretched to land in the corner despite being tackled by three Blad defenders.
The win pushed Kulabu’s points tally to 37 two short of sixth placed Nakuru who won 21-17 against Impala RFC.
