A Felix Otieno hat trick helped Mwamba RFC demolish a stubborn Thika RFC 31-8 in a feisty Kenya Cup match played on Saturday 26 February 2016 at Thika Stadium.
The ill-tempered match saw the centre referee Peter Leo issue five yellow cards, three going to Mwamba RFC and two to the hosts.
Thika RFC started the match brightly and pinned the visitors in their own half. A series of penalties went against the black shirts but they overturned the ball in their own 22 to launch a swift counter attack that saw winger Samuel Mundia stopped five metres short of the try line.
Blindside flanker Clyde Mulando was on hand to rip off the ball from the maul and sprint to land under the post. Shaban Ahmed added the extras for a 7-0 lead.
Thika would again win a penalty near the red zone after an infringement by the Black Shirts. They elected to go for points and their kicker was spot on reducing the deficit to 7-3.
Lock Brian “Gentle G” Otieno was sent to the bin for dangerous play midway through first half.
Another counter attack saw Felix “Top Dog” Otieno sprint 60m metres to land his first try under the post with Shaban kicking it. Otieno’s second of the match came after he timed his run perfectly to be played in by cemtre Marcus Mureithi. Shaban was again spot on with the kick for 21-3 halftime lead.
The second half was a scrappy affair that saw Lavin Asego sent to the naughty chair for foul play and was later followed to the bin by replacement Anthony Karanja for the same offence.
Otieno would power his way to the try line for his third of the match and Hyke Otieno rounded up the score after Asego had picked him out with a deft cross kick. Thika would score their try after the hooter for a 31-8 final score.
Mwamba rise to 6th position on the log with 46 points level with Nakuru RFC but the latter has a superior goal differences.
